Finalmente sono riuscito nell'intento di far funzionare il Tinky sul nostro amato NAS senza rinunciare al secondo canale IDE, alla porta USB, nonché all'intefaccia web funzionante per gestirle. Potete scaricare qui (sul mio sito personale) il firmware Tinky da me modificato. Non sapendo come chiamarlo, non ho fatto altro che aggiungere il suffisso LS (Lord Scaffard, il mio alias sulla mailing list di nas2000) al nome ufficiale di Tinky. E' probabile che dalle prossime versioni di Tinky il mio "lavoro" sia già incluso, trattandosi solo di ripristino di device e script-code rimosso originariamente dall'autore per "fare spazio". Le istruzioni per usare il firmware sono nel README, così come le istruzioni originali nel README.Tinky.
Mi raccomando: pur consigliandovi di provare il nuovo fw - così come han già fatto con successo il sottoscritto e due avventurosi della mailing list nas2000 - esso è in fase ancora di test e quindi l'aggiornamento è sconsigliato ai newbie e ai deboli di cuore.

Thanks for your quick support! On my NAS ist the actual firmware G5S52233205. If I understand your readme right, I have at first to update the NAS to the version G5S52233211, if I like to use the webgui. After the update (and everthing works fine) I can use again the webgui to update with twinky, correct?
It's happend what I feared, the Nas is dead! The upgrad to version G5S52233211 wasn't succesful. I waited 30 minutes after the update and started the Nas again. Blue and red light shows that the power is on and the network plug is connected. But no chance to connect to the Nas, it isn't to see in my network. Also the "SetupUtil" can't connect to the Nas. Any ideas?

my Nas is connect to DSL Modem/Router and gets over DHCP the ip. Yesterday evening I tried to connect the Nas with a crossover cable. The link connection was to see, green light and red light on the Nas and connection icon on the PC. But I couldn't get a connection to the Nas. I tried it with telenet but the Nas was not visible in the network. The next step will be to try it with redboot (I never did this before). I can not understand that so many people have problems with updating the Nas (to an official firmware!). Oh, by the way, I tooked out the battery over night, with the hope that this will make any sense, but...nothing.
For me crossover cable didn't work, try right one through router but disconnect it from internet. In this way you should easily access redboot
O.K., I will try it this evening. The problem I see is that my router can't see the Nas (no Mac adress). So for my opinion it will not work, but I have no experience with redboot or linux an I will try everything.
hi bassfrank! i'm sorry for your problems. I dont understand what happened to your NAS upgrading to the newer firmware. Did you removed the hard disks before upgrading? I think it's not needed by MRT communications tells so in its download page. You may probably resume your NAS by connecting it to your PC directly or using an hub/switch. A direct PC connection (with crossover cable) may probably need more retries because of the link detect XP mechanism. I did it so with 5 or more tests, but i like using a switch instead. When done, you have to manually update the kernel, ramdisk and application partitions (dont upgrade the bootloader, please!). To do that follow this link (but replacing the action and partition names with the correct one):

Hi Lord Scaffard, nice to hear (better to read) from you. Yes, I did the update without the harddisk because I saw this advice by MRT. I followed the discription in the readme and I was shure to do the right things, but... O.K. that's the past and I will look to the future. You wrote that I shouldn't upgrade the bootloader. That means only to copy the files to the ramdisk but not flashing? After that only start the Nas again and nothing more?

what i meant is updating - via the NAS "telnet on boot" update feature - only Kernel, Ramdisk and Application partitions instead of upgrading the entire bootloader. You have to open the *.tgz image file and put zImage + rd.gz + hddapp.tgz on your preferred tftp server folder (use tftpboot32 on windows). Then you have to turn-on your NAS and telnet it on ip 192.168.2.71, port 9000. Be aware: you have to configure your PC ip to 192.168.2.1 (for example), and start the telnet cmd when you turn on the NAS (the I/O button). Then, you have to "Create a new image" for each of these (Ramdisk, Application and Kernel), inserting exactly same values listed with option 4 (List images), but uploading them using tftp from your PC. It's not so easy but you can do that.
So, back again. I'am inside my NAS! That means that I can see the bootloader menu, yeah! O.K. the next step is to select point 4: Create new image. Done..now he ask me for the image file? It is not the CentriNAS-v2_3_3b.tar right?

So late and still working on the PC? I followed the manual and after hours I know more and more. I'm in the bootloader and I go through the menue. Everthing is fine - but in the moment I have to upload the file (example rd.gz) I receive the answer: "Can't load /Ramdisk/rd.gz time out" I'm working with XP ind the DOS promt window. I tried to use Tftpd32, but I can't upload the images (I believe I have the wrong settings). I give it up for today. Tomorrow is an other day and perhaps over night I get an idea. Thanks to both of you for your support. If I will manage this problem in the future I will describe it in a manual for dummies (and under XP). It's not so easy for me.
not so late. some clock time problem, probably (not mine). you seem to have troubles setting up a tftp server. tftpd32 is the best (and most easy) choice i know for windows!
Aggiornamento eseguito con successo !! Adesso sto verificando con un disco le performance (ne ho solo una per i test al momento), appena posso posto una guida passo passo per gli utenti windows .

So, I'm back and my NAS too! Thanks for your support folks. Great, but I found final the solution for my mistakes at http://haukap.net. O.K., now I'm ready for the next step, tinky. I saw the readme and their was a point that I have to delete the zImage and the ImageInfo from tinky-ls.tgz. That means to me that I need only the rd.gz and the hddapp.tgz file, right? Can I upload this two files with Redboat and tfpt32 like I did before? It seems to me the safer way because I don't know to delete the files from tinky-ls.tgz.
O.K., I installed tinky successful! The next step is twonky. I will kepp you informed.

il tutto via browser. il processo è durato circa 25 minuti,spegnendo e riaccendendo il nas mi sono ritrovato praticamente con un nas morto, non riesco a trovarlo con nessuno ip.Credo di aver fatto un gran casino caricando questo firmware, vi prego se qualcuno potesse darmi una dritta per come ripristinare il tutto. Nei commenti precedenti al tuo ci sono già descritte alcune procedure da seguire per controllare se il nas sia effettivamente morto e nel caso provare a farlo resucitare, quì: http://tinyurl.com/26hp8p trovi il readme per aggiornare il firmware da redboot.

grazie Samtruman, ho provato con putty avendo win come sistema e collegando pc e nas tramite uno switch. Per la configurazione TCP del pc ho utilizzato come ip:192.168.2.10 come sub: 255.255.255.0 e gateway vuoto. Nulla da fare lancio il comando da putty, provo poi nel terminale a pingare l'ip 192.168.2.71 ma niente, la finestra dos si chiude.

Hi Samtruman, nice description but it's not necessary to use PuTTy on a windows system. I use under windows xp the DOS box (Start, Run and cmd)with the same telnet commands. It's much more easier to reach the Redboat menue. All other functions and commands (telenet)will also work. With PuTTy it's not so easy to catch the 2 seconds time-frame.

Non sono riuscito a trovare recensioni o test che parlino delle performance del 35HD-DUAL-NAS-E connesso tramite gigabit lan. Qualcuno di voi sa dirmi il transfer rate medio o comunque un giudizio rispetto ad altri prodotti simili?

Si dovrebbe funzionare, anzi la funzionalità dell'usb è stato uno dei motivi per i quali il firmware Tinky è stato modificato, non ti so dire di più perchè la porta usb non l'ho mai utilizzata. Comunque al massimo se hai problemi puoi sempre tornare al vecchio firmware.

Ciao a tutti! Finalmente trovo un blog dedicato al Dual HDD Nas...fino a ieri non sapevo neanche di che marca fosse lol. Ho 2 dischi WesternDigital ATA da 320gb e vorrei creare un array RAID1 e formattarli in EXT3. Ho provato più volte ma con scarsi risultati; la barra di avanzamento dopo un po' si ferma e anche lasciando acceso il Nas per diverse ore, non mi formatta correttamente i 2 dischi e non mi crea l'array...come versione di firmware ho la G5S52233205; esistono versioni più recenti? Se sì, dove posso trovarle? Non ho ben capito cos'è Tinky...è un firmware modificato?

Tinky-ls è una versione modificata del nas, con delle funzioni aggiuntive, aggiorna il nas all'ultima versione del firmware, i link li trovi sul wiki mrt.nas-central.org e poi installa tinky, ti sconsiglio di usare ext3 perchè non avrai a disposizione lo spindown ma se è una funzione che non ti interessa allora è ok.

Mah guarda lo metterei su volentieri il Tinky, ma prima vorrei riuscire almeno a creare quel benedetto array raid1 in ext2 con quei 2 dischi western da 320gb...anche aggiornando il firmware alla vG5S52233211 mi dà gli stessi problemi di prima: dopo un po' che sta crando l'array raid, la barra di avanzamento si ferma e anche aspettando ore, non succede nulla...forse questa operazione va fatta con il NAS collegato ad un pc e non al router? Va messo qualche jumper particolare sui dischi? Non so magari cable select...hai qualche dritta da darmi?

Ciao a tutti, io possiedo un Giga Nas con due hard disk sata da 500giga all'interno. Li ho formattati in FAT32 per avere la compatibilità con copiare file da un mediaplayer che non gestisce EXT2 o EXT3. A tale proposito però mi trovo in rete con un'hard disk completamente configurabile con autorizzazioni utenti etc, mentre l'altro lo vedo come ID4 e non posso dare nessuna autorizzazione. Questo è un problema perchè chiunque dalla rete può non solo accedervi ma anche copiare, cancellare qualsiasi cosa. C'è qualcuno che mi possa dare una mano dettagliamente in modalità windows se possibile dare autorizzazioni a questo ID4 ? Vi ringrazio anticipatamente.

Per questo tipo di domande dovresti usare il forum http://storlinkdevices.memoriedigitali.com, comunque ti posso dire che essendo un nas la compatibilità con i formati non la devi proprio considerare, tu potresti usare qualsiasi altro formato,è il nas a gesitre i dischi, le comunicazioni con l'esterno avvengono via samba che è un protocollo che sicuramente il tuo mediaplayer gestisce altrimenti non vedresti i dischi a prescindere dal formato.
Per quanto riguarda il secondo hard disk anche io ho lo stesso problema, e non l'ho mai risolto (e non ci ho mai provato, come ti ho detto prova sul forum e vedi se qualcuno ha una soluzione...
Ho 2 dischi da 320gb in RAID1 EXT2. Se provo a copiare nel nas dei file da 2-3gb mi appare uno strano messaggio: "scrittura rimandata non riuscita", il trasferimento file si interrompe e sono costretto a riavviare il nas perchè diventa inutilizzabile. Avete qualche dritta da darmi? grazie

Salve a tutti, ho aggiornato il mio NAS con il firmware tinky-ls, ma purtroppo, finito l'aggiornamento e riavviato, non si accede piu' al dispositivo.
Si comporta esattamente come descritto nel post di cikoloko.
Purtroppo il mio inglese tecnico è scarsino, vorrei chiedervi se esiste un link in italiano ove posso trovare info su come tentare di riattivare il NAS.
Il modello in questione è il 35HD-DUAL-NAS-E.
